Her Circle

Artist in Residence

Our current project, Mother Tongue, explores textiles as a shared inheritance: the ways women have expressed their lives and stories through stitching, weaving and cloth. Through traditional quilt making and embroidery, we’re finding our own ways to continue that conversation.

Gentle invitations to make, talk and reflect open up themes of nostalgia, care and inheritance: what passes from mother to child, and what we carry forward. Each woman chooses what to explore and how much to share, with space for difficult experiences alongside memories of connection and care.

Making together also offers a way to recognise the support women find through Her Circle and one another. Sisterhood, confidence and finding a voice are central to the project. Art can make space for stories and experiences that might otherwise struggle to be heard.

The women’s finished artworks will be exhibited at Newcastle City Library in March 2027, sharing their creativity and stories with a wider audience.

I’ve worked with Her Circle since 2024, beginning with a six-month residency commissioned through Newcastle City Council.

This led to A Story of Hope, an artwork responding to my time with the women, exhibited at Newcastle Cathedral for International Women’s Day 2025.

As resident artist, I continue to work with the women through regular, usually weekly, sessions and retreat days. I support them to build confidence in expressing themselves through visual art, offering guidance as they lead their own creative projects.
