An artistic response to the Raise the Colours movement, which has seen thousands of flags affixed to lampposts, bridges and buildings in the last year. Those flags are a statement of supposed patriotism; this exhibition is our response.

In Conversation with the Flags

I have gathered a group of artists and makers from across the North East, from Tees Valley to Newcastle. All of us share a common feeling, a call to action in the face of challenging political times in our country. The flags, for me, represent something that has broken in our communities. Division prevails in many areas, including those closest to me here in Stockton. But it is not the only story and certainly not the one I experience working among the people in my local community. Many of the world’s problems are too big for me to solve, but the flags... now there’s something we can change. I have a deep curiosity surrounding the subversive nature of the flags in our collective consciousness and the complex symbolisms and histories of our nations flag.

Exhibition information:
These artworks are intended to be displayed in one day ‘pop-up’ style exhibitions. Our intention is to bring the work into as many areas around the North East as we can and capture authentic reactions from the public.
Along with these artworks, there will be information about the Raise the Colours movement, taken directly from their website, along with a recent news article from the Guardian. The Union Flag is displayed prominently and viewers are encouraged to share the thoughts and emotions the flags evokes for them. They can do this verbally in conversation with the artists in the room, or by writing them on a slip of paper. We have plans to include audio recordings to this process in the future.
Other artists are currently making works to eventually contribute to this exhibition.
